Unveiling the Legacy: JCAN's 10-Year Anniversary Brunch Celebrates Seniors, Heritage, and Wisdom

Jacqueline Chen

This year’s Brunch for a Cause was more than just an event; it was a vibrant celebration of our heritage, the wisdom of our seniors, and the strength of community. In honor of Black History Month and JCAN’s 10th anniversary, the gathering, held February 23, 2025 united people from different generations for an afternoon full of inspiration, joyful music, and meaningful connections.

A Remarkable Celebration

The brunch was hosted by the talented Marc Trinidad, whose infectious energy infused the gathering with laughter and a true sense of belonging. From the moment guests entered, the venue was filled with joy and excitement as they came together to celebrate a decade of JCAN’s impactful service.

The atmosphere was electrified by performances from the renowned Eddie Bullen and the dynamic Sisgare Drummers. Their energetic rhythms not only set the perfect mood but also highlighted the importance of cultural expression in our gatherings. Participants clapped along to the beats, letting the music weave a sense of community that resonated throughout the hall.

The Wisdom of our Elders

We were privileged to have The Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine as our keynote speaker. A trailblazer in advocating for the rights of the Black community, she shared insights on the critical role that seniors play, calling them "Elders." This term reflects their deep wisdom and the stories they carry.

Dr. Augustine powerfully stated, “We must recognize our seniors not just as older adults but as Elders, the wisdom-keepers, the storytellers, and the pillars of our community.” Her speech highlighted the importance of valuing their experiences, particularly in decision-making processes. Research shows that communities that engage their Elders see a 25% increase in youth participation, demonstrating the value of intergenerational connections.

The call to honor our Elders echoed the founding mission of JCAN: to cultivate a community where all voices are valued and heard.

A Heartwarming Dance

One of the event's most memorable moments was when seniors from the Social Connect program showcased their line dance routine. Their spirited performance brought joy, laughter, and a reminder that age doesn't limit our zest for life.

Watching them dance reinvigorated the audience and encouraged many to join in. This shared joy demonstrated a vital truth: moments of celebration can bind generations together and promote a sense of belonging, reminding everyone that life should always be celebrated, regardless of age.

Honoring a Community Leader

This year, we proudly recognized Dr. Sylvanus Thompson with the JCAN Community Legacy Award. His unwavering commitment to uplifting the Black community has inspired many and left an indelible mark.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Thompson reflected on how the wisdom of seniors shapes our society. He urged everyone to foster relationships across generations, noting that building these connections can lead to social improvements in neighborhoods. Communities that prioritize intergenerational relationships often report a 30% increase in community participation rates.

A Commitment to the Future

The Brunch for a Cause served as a powerful reminder of the importance of connections and mutual support. JCAN's mission remains crucial in today's fast-paced world, where genuine relationships can easily be overlooked.

As guests enjoyed a delicious spread of soul food and engaged in lively discussions, it became clear that recognizing our heritage and honoring our Elders are integral to creating a nurturing environment for everyone. This celebration not only honored the past but also looked to a brighter future filled with collaboration and unity.

Connecting Through Stories

During the brunch, host Marc Trinidad invited participants to share popular sayings from their Caribbean islands. Each story provided a glimpse into the resilience and strength that define our culture. By exchanging these experiences, we celebrate our cultural vibrancy and encourage commonalities, emphasizing that we are more the same than different.

The emphasis was not solely on bridging generational gaps but rather on showcasing the vibrant cultural traits that resonate within the Black community.

Interpreting the sayings not only elicited laughter but also unveiled deeper meanings, fostering connections among participants. This process highlighted that, despite our diverse island origins, we possess more shared traits than differences.

Reflecting on the Celebration

This year’s Brunch for a Cause beautifully captured the essence of community, celebrating heritage, valuing our Elders, and forging connections across generations. It reinforced JCAN's role as a pillar of support over the past decade while also looking forward to the future.

As we reminisce about the laughter, shared stories, and connections made during this vibrant event, we express our gratitude for the memories created. We are excited to continue this tradition of honoring our seniors and uplifting our community in the years to come.
